The Food Safety and Quality Control Authority (FSQA) has last week announced through an issued press statement the recall of the Delta canned drink including legal action against the supplier following receiving of numerous concerns over the fruit canned drink with a misleading label.
In a released statement signed by the Director General of the FSQA, Momodou Bah, on July 3 2020 has stated that series of concerns that were received from the public regarding the fake labeling of the Delta canned drink despite it none expiry date has a resulted to a gross violation of the Food Safety and Quality control Act 2011. The statement added that such act will compel the agency to start recalling all fruit drinks related to the delta canned.
“We have received numerous concerns over the fruit canned drink (Delta) with a misleading label and fraudulent act. Even though the concern canned drinks has not expired, this is still a gross violation of the Food Safety and Quality Control Act of 2011 (section 42) and has therefore prompted us to take the following actions by identifying the supplier responsible for the act.
“Also a mandatory product recall has been initiated to recover all the product supplied for destruction and disposal, also our food safety and personnel have been dispatched to confiscate any of the product found in the shops, supermarkets, and warehouses all over the country and finally steps to prosecute the supplier has been initiated by the authority.
“The general public is hereby assured that the Food Safety and Quality Control Authority will do everything in our disposal to ensure that the food manufactured, processed, distributed, sold and consumed in The Gambia is safe and of good quality to the public. If anyone comes across such a product please report the matter to the agency or inform by calling 4466797,” the statement concluded.
The agency which is instituted by an act of parliament to oversee the safety of food in the country over the recent months has had a series of administrative embattles where dozens of its staff were been sacked by the former Director General alleging the lack of staff discipline after she was accused of office abused and unnecessary outside travels.
