The Gambia on Saturday registered 15 new cases of Covid-19, the highest number recorded in a single day since the outbreak of global coronavirus in the country and announced by Ministry of Health in March 2020.
The new cases bring the country’s cases to 93. One more person has died bringing the death toll to four while there are 39 active cases and a crude case fatality rate of 4.3
“Of these, whereas 6 are nosocomial Covid-19 cases from the 6&7 Ward of the EFSTH, 1 is an orderly from the same ward,” Health Ministry stated.
The Ministry of Health also disclosed that fifteen (15) Gambian Islamic Scholars who travelled from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia into the country have been discharged after completing the 14 days mandatory quarantine.
The 15 were among 19 people taken into mandatory isolation. The Scholars were intercepted in The Gambia Amdalai border as they travelled from Senegal.
The Ministry of Health said: “While 19 persons were newly taken into quarantine, 20 have been discharged.Of these, 15 are Gambian Islamic scholars who travelled from Saudi Arabia through Senegal and entered through the Amdalai Border Post.”
The country currently has 662 people in quarantine with 39 active and 4 deaths.
Meanwhile, discussions are at an advanced stage for government to provide health insurance for healthcare workers.
Health worker who suffers infection from Covid-19 will get full medical treatment and in case of anyone of them succumbs to the disease, his/her family will get a compensation package and the children will be provided with scholarship to first degree level in a public institution in The Gambia.
