Smart Business Group Tuesday donated hundreds of protective gears plus other materials to prison officers and inmates at the State Central Prison, Mile II, Banjul.

The materials included 1,800 face masks, 5 thermometer machines, 15 hand washing buckets, 60 bottles of bleach, 60 bags of laundry soap and 100 sachets of detergent powdered soap.

The donation from SBG is part of its social responsibility towards the fight against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Speaking at the handing over of the materials, Omar Njie, proprietor of SBG said the donated items from SBG is meant to complement the government efforts in fighting the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the country.

He described prison inmates as “very vulnerable people” and urged others to give support and help to the prison services.

“The prison should not look as a place for criminals but it should be a correction centre were people get in and later be corrected and embarrassed by society again,” he said.

Representing the prison director, Saikou Kawsu Gassama described the donation as a timely gesture came at the right time amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

He said the donated materials will help the prison service – including prison officers and inmates. “We all know this institution has so many challenges, you can attest to the public hearing of TRCC were so many ugly stories of this institution were revealed. That really tells that we need support from individuals and agencies and government,” he noted.
