The Mayor of Banjul City has promised residents of the city her council’s commitment to address the waste problem within the city.
Mayor Rohey Lowe Malick made this promise Thursday while receiving two trucks donated to the BCC by the Gambia Ports Authority.
The donated trucks aimed to help the city council to collect wastes generated within the city.
The Mayor appealed to the residents of the city to exercise patience saying “we will solve the waste management and everyone will be happy from now upwards December.”
She lamented of financial challenges within the council and “this is why it is important to have support from every institution and every stakeholder within and outside Banjul. Putting into consideration that the capital city is everyone’s business and that is what Gambia Ports has demonstrated.”
“The restructuring of the waste management department is also a primary for my council as well as to others who have been writing to us through our suggestion box. I totally concord with them that the restructuring is important to the city, be rest assure that the investment from Banjul EU project, the central government project, the donation received from the ports authority and the outcry from the public have trigger us to tighten our belts and make sure the restructuring will be a reality,” she said.
She revealed that the council is expecting more equipment while assuring the people of Banjul that more achievements are in offing.
The Mayor therefore urged youths to join in helping manage the wastes within the city, as the council will do its best to develop the youth capacities and support them.
