Basiru Gassama, spokesman of National People’s Party for Bakau, has urged the United Democratic Party to allow the embattle chairman of West Coast Region, Sheriffo Sonko, to complete his mandate.
Mr Gassama told The Voice in an interview that “UDP should live chairman Sonko to complete his term, you cannot allow somebody to be there for over three years and you want to eject the person I think that is a wrong move.”
He said if they (UDP) want to go for by-election in Brikama (West Coast Region) that will cost the country a lot considering the pandemic also.
He said UDP should be targeting next election instead of fighting a losing battle “over the amendment of the Local Government Amendment Bill 2020.”
He also lashed out at the lawmakers that “they failed the country because the time they were setting themselves free, why can’t they free the area council at once.”
It could be recalled that Chairman Sonko was expelled from UDP after been accused of shifting allegiance to President Barrow’s camp.
But Mr Sonko challenged UDP decision as he issued a warning letter to the party to stop interfering in his official duties, though, UDP has taken the matter to the Court.
