Mai Ahmed Fatty, leader of Gambia Moral Congress has differed his stance from those that are demanding for the scrap of the Anti-Crime Unit as it is a wrong and unjustifiable calls.
Mr Fatty was speaking at a news conference held at his party headquarters on Tuesday amid contentious calls demanding the scrapping of Gambia anti-crime department.
“And I differ with all those who are calling for the scrapping of the anti-crime department. The calls for it to be scrapped is wrong, is improper and the foundation is unjustifiable,” he said.
He made it clear that every country needs an anti-crime department saying “it is functional and effective department that must exist in any country that cares about violent.”
Meanwhile, he reinterred his support for maintaining the anti-crime department saying “I stand firmly in supporting the mandate of the anti-crime department.”
Meanwhile, he noted that “today the respond to crime is not violent crime from law enforcement, the respond to crime is not another effective crime management.”
He added: “But the respond to crime is building an economy and a political system that is capable of responding to needs of young people. So that we can create better jobs for them – we can build up opportunities and they can feel part that inclusive development.”
Mr Fatty said many of those involved in criminal activities in the country are mostly young people who are between the ages of 14 to 35, adding “as much as you look at the crime statistic – the majority of people involved in crimes are young people between the ages of 16 and sometimes 14 to 35.”
“And this is the most important democracy in our country. But this is the democracy that is wasting our aim because we have a government that do not care about the future of our country,” he said.
