A US-based charity called Jurarim Organization for Youth Excellence (JOYE) has provided a three hundred and fifty thousand dalasis [D350,000] worth water borehole to Mbollet-Ba village in Lower Niumi district, North Bank Region.
The new borehole, described one of its kinds in the area is meant to provide clean and sufficient drinking water to the residents.
Speaking at the handing over the borehole to the residents, Modou Corr, village head of Mbollet-Ba expressed gratitude to the organization for the gesture. He said the project will benefit thousands of people in the community.
“We have been facing water shortage for a long time,” he said.
With this new borehole, he called on other philanthropists, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to help provide more boreholes to the community to make it sufficient for entire community.
Mariama Joof, called on government among others to assist the community with electricity and a health post so as to ease their survival.
Amat Joof, coordinator of JOYE in NBR disclosed that the organization has been supporting Gambians on the area of education and agriculture since inception.
He therefore called on others to compliment government efforts in bringing development to the doorstep of the masses.
Mathew A Gomez, chief executive officer for the group said “The project is to address basic human needs, which include water supply, health, basic education, vocational training, sanitary environment and rural infrastructure among other projects that JOYE embarks on.”
He added that “Access to clean water is not only a basic need of mankind, but a necessity to sustain all forms of life in the world.”
He described scarcity of water in poor communities as obstacles which needs to be collectively addressed.
Mr Gomez therefore called on the community to take good care of the borehole to ensure its sustainability.
