National Disaster Management Agency has reported that flash floods and windstorms have affected 20,708 persons from 912 households in different parts of the country.
The Gambian minister of Information and Communication Infrastructure, Ebrima Sillah, gave this indication at a weekly inter-ministerial press conference, organized by the ministry of information, at the 6th online session here on Friday.
He said Upper River Region is the hardest hit with more than 6,000 persons affected, saying that the affected families need assistance in the form of food, shelter and clothing as the rains progress.
“In some parts of the country, farmlands, food and seeds stores and school buildings were partially or severely damaged. The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has also recorded damage to 84 water points and 151 sanitary facilities. Some of these facilities were submerged in the flooded waters,” he said.
Sillah also said that the NDMA structures across the country, together with relevant partners, are collecting data on the impact of the climate hazards and man induced disasters.
Meanwhile, he said the Gambian government, upon request from NDMA, has pledged 15 million Gambian Dalasis to conduct a rapid response to the disaster victims across the country.
In another development, he revealed that on the 14th September 2020, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice will table the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, 2020 (Promulgation) Bill, 2020.
Sillah said this Bill intends to completely repeal the 1997 Constitution and replace it with the new draft Constitution.
The Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, 2020, is promulgated in accordance with the provisions of section 226 of the 1997 Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia.
