Tamba J.Y Camara, spokesperson of Patriot Association (PA) said the reason for the rejection of the Draft Constitution is nothing but to put fear on the masses and deprived them their basic human rights.

Speaking at the press conference held at Tabokoto on Monday, he said the rejection of the Draft Constitution would also bring room for self-perpetuating rule over the people against the will to promote professional misconduct in working sectors.

“We are here today as a start of a protest to show to the Government of The Gambia that Gambians will continue to protest in many forms until they cease disrespecting our voice and plight”, he declared.

However, he expressed their disappointment to The Gambia government over the rejection of the Draft Constitution, saying the rejection of the Draft Constitution was a conspiracy. He also said, the resources that were put into the 2020 Draft Constitution could have been used in other sectors such as education, health, road Infrastructures, telecommunication and many other development projects.

“This Government was instituted by majority of Gambians in 2016 on the principles of good

Governance democracy, accountability and transparency and these principles gave birth to

Janneh Commissions, Truth Reconciliation and Reparation Commission (TRRC), National

Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC), too,” he said.

Camara went on that the 1997 Constitution has many bad laws which have no place in modern democracy and society.

Dodou Kassa Jatta, also a member of PA added that, Patriot is an Association formed by a Gambian since the rejection of the 2020 Draft Constitution and also shared similar words with the spokesperson of the Association.
