Lots of Students within the greater Banjul Area have welcomed State decision over the reopening of the academy session in various schools across the country after seven months of shutdown due to coronavirus pandemic.

They all expressed their satisfaction saying they are safe to resume classes.

Matida Drammeh, student of A Better Chance Learning Center told The Voice that “I am safe to go back to school and resume classes after seven months of sitting at home due to the pandemic.”

“Students are asked to wash their hands before entering the school premises and our temperature is also checks, also in the class we are not even more than 14 people with 1meter distance between each chair and desk of every student,” she added.

She noted that they are observing the health guideline as advised by the World Health Organization and the nation’s Health Ministry. “We wear facemasks in classes and observed social distancing during break time.”

According to her, since the reopening of schools they have been told to sew their facemasks from their school uniforms.

However she was expecting the Ministry of Education to provide them with facemasks “but unfortunately they didn’t,” lamented.

Ousman Sarr, a student of SBEC International School said he is safe because he is implementing all the preventive measures given by the WHO and the Ministry of Health.

“To me, we are safe as teachers are doing their quota in what is needed to be done in making sure students observe social distancing,” he said.

Modou Njie, Student of Brufut High School, said the Ministry should provide them with facemask as it is highly recommended in schools and they cannot use the ones they sew for the whole term.

But Isatou Jobe, a student differed with her fellow students as she insisted that: “the students are not safe as far as Covid-19 is still existing in The Gambia. “To be honest we are not safe because Covid-19 is still here and though we are told to take preventive measures, as a student I am so used to my friends and hardly distance myself from them. Especially the day we resume back, we hugged each other after the long break of not seeing each other.”
