The Gambia Red Cross has received mobility equipment including five ambulances, 8 utilities and 10 motorbikes from International Federal of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony, Jato Sillah, President of Gambia Red Cross described the gesture as timely, saying the vehicles came at a time when it is most needed.
“All Red Cross members are volunteers in the sense that they are doing it from their own will. We are being good citizens, trying to contribute our quota for the needy and the vulnerable people really in need of the service,” he said.
He added: “since the Gambia registered it first case of covid-19, we the society volunteers have engaged in a lot of activities but most recent ones were the impasse at all borders at everywhere in the Gambia.”
He said most people think Red volunteers only deals with emergency cases, noting that Red Cross is far beyond that, they deal with livelihood of the people, assistances, gardening, capacity building and provide drinking water to the vulnerable in the society.
He assured the nation that all supports from partners and individuals will go to the service of the needy and not the Red Cross volunteers.
He commended the Federal of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies for their tireless effort, saying they have been supporting the Gambia Red Cross Society with many beneficial things.
Mr. Abdoulie Faye, Program Manager, Red Cross also said when the grades were to sit their GABSE exams, it was hard adding the red cross volunteers and fumigate over 500 upper Basic School and provide to detergents the ministry of basic and secondary Education.
Noting that, the grade nines resume for exams and no case was registered during their exams.
Meanwhile, Faye said the vehicles and the motorbikes will go a long way and they will make sure make good use of them.
The Red Cross is at the fore front and we want all the Gambians to appreciate our efforts as we are here for them, he said.
