One hundred people have been taken to magistrates’ courts while hundred others await trial after the National Environment Agency launched fresh crackdown on plastic users.
NEA said enforcement on the ban on plastic bags Order 2015 has resulted in hundreds of “offenders arrested, hundreds taken to magistrate courts, while hundreds awaiting bail at different police stations or possible evacuation to Mile two if no one is willing to bail them”.
“The NEA therefore call on all citizens and non-alike residing in the country to be law abiding, noting that Environmental protection is everyone`s business. The ban on plastic bags came to order since July 2015,” the agency added.
The crackdown is believed to have begun since last week and it has also seen the agency disentangle different smuggling methods including women pretending to be pregnant whilst robed their stomach with plastic bags to increase the volume/size.
