Residents and local leaders in the village of Boro Kanda Kasse in Wuli East District, Upper River Region have raised concerns about shortage of clean and safe drinking water for their locality since early this year.
The borehole that were drilled over 27 years ago have since broken down, leaving the locals with no option but to trek long distances to the neighboring villages to fetch water.
Mr Mawdo Gari, the chairman Village Development Committee, said lack of clean water has persisted for long but the government gives a deaf ear to their cries, despite written letters to the government requesting for “Support to Rehabilitate our Water facility” on 20th August, 2020.
“Lack of water to drink is the biggest challenge that we face in this village. It has been on for over half a year now but there is no hope since we sought intervention but no response at all,” he lamented.
Mrs Janjumeh Fofana, Spokesperson of the Yiriwa Kafoo (a women development organization) of Boro Kanda Kasse, said “it is unfortunate that government have not intervened despite repeated reminders to them.
When our member of parliament Mr Suwaibou Touray has a meeting with them (officials of Water resources), he informed them of our plight but I think they just jotted down our concerns in note book and forget about it,” she explained
The Baja Kunda Ward Counsilor, Mr Omar Garry said the people of Boro Kanda Kasse trek kilometers to fetch water for drinking from neighbouring villages, he appealed to the government to come to the aid of his people.
The district Seyfo who happens to be a native of Boro Kanda Kasse, said if there is no immediate intervention, people and animals of the area will continue to suffer as a result of lack of clean water.
It is worth knowing that Boro Kanda Kasse is the third largest community in Wuli East.
