Chief of Gambia’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has said ‘perpetrators of 2005 massacre of at least 56 West African migrants should be taken to court for prosecution’ and that the victims’ families should be adequately compensated.
This comes days after rights groups renewed campaign call to take former Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh to justice.
Emanuel Daniel Joof called for fresh independent investigation into the massacre saying despite previous investigation was said to involve international bodies but were not allowed to independent conduct an independent investigation.
“So, this case should be reopened, a proper investigation must be done so that we can get to the bottom of the matter. And perpetrators should be taken to court and there should be adequate compensation to those who have lost their love ones,” he said.
He also urged Gambian government to speed up efforts in their investigation so that the culprits could face justice.
“We will encourage our government to make all possible avenues, It is a criminal matter is not close and then investigation should be done.
“Now we are getting it from the horse’s mouth those who have actually taken part in the massacre we heard them talk. They explained to us what exactly happened even when they were executing some what they said to them. We must be serious about this thing. The outcome was one: to show solidarity, to tell them that we are with them, we do not support impunity,” he added.
