One of the opposition parties, Citizens’ Alliance has called for ‘transparency’ regards to the tenure of the Independent Electoral Commission’s chairman, Alieu Momar Njai.
Alieu Momar Njai has been heading the institution since 2016, but dozens of people has alleged that his tenure has expired.
Speaking at a news conference, Dr Ismail Ceesay, told reporters that broudespite his party doesn’t say the mandate of the electoral commission chief expired but that it has been surrounded by controversy which he said must be cleared before next year’s election to avoid election brouhaha.
“The other issue which we think is worthy of mentioning and which we think the IEC and the government should take note of is the tenure of the IEC chairman,” he said.
He added that “We are not saying he doesn’t have the mandate, but there are suggestions from all corners that his tenure has ended. There must be transparency around the tenure of the IEC chairperson.”
About 2 million Gambians will go to the polls on 1st December, 2021 to elect a president who will lead them for the next five years. Dozens of political parties announced their intention to unseat the incumbent, Adama Barrow, who is seeking a second term.
