A lawmaker has announced move to advise the Barrow-led government to revisit The Gambia-Senegal bilateral relationship what he called “to better safeguard our sovereignty.”
MP for Jimara constituency Hon. Alhagie H Sowe made the announcement following an assault on a Gambian man, Saikou Jobarteh, by Senegalese security officials.
Local reports said the Senegalese security officials assaulted the Mr Jobarteh in his home village of Gambisara – after he was chased by the security officials for transporting wood trees.
Hon. Sowe has strongly condemned the action and described it as “uncalled for.”
“I am urging the government during a parliamentary session to revisit the Gambian-Senegal bilateral agreement to better safeguard our sovereignty as a nation from foreign interventions,” he said.
“The Senegalese security forced their way into Gambisara to seize the cut down trees from Senegal which resulted to severe injuries to a native of Gambisara by the name Saikou Jobarteh as they open fire during the scrambling with the villagers. This is not the first time such contention is happening between the Senegalese security and the people of Jimara,” he added.
He called on the government to mount an investigation on this matter at the soonest time possible
