The Gambian media have been praised for its tireless fight against the deadly coronavirus since its emergence in last year.
The virus which doesn’t spare journalists – has infected over 3,000 people and killed more than 100 people in the country.
World Health Organisation’s country health promotion specialist, Momodou Gassama said: “We regard you as somebody – a surgeon in the theatre. We regard you as a medical doctor in the treatment centre like those oxygens we regard you as important as they are.”
He urged media men and women not to belittle their strengths, “you are as important as they are in this business. We thank you, we honoured you, and we appreciate you and continue to do the good job.”
He said the country needs the help of journalists in making change in the public behaviour over coronavirus hence some people are still in denial of the existence of the disease in the country.
“We have clocked over 3 million cases now and how many deaths over 70, 000 people have died and The Gambia also we are not exempted. So, which means that the disease is still there and contrary to what have been said ‘it is not true’ the disease is here and we are still battling with it,” he said
More over “We need your support because to change behaviour is not easy – the numbers are increasing,” he added.
