Banjul South MP announces intention to lead PPP

By Adama Makasuba

The National Assembly member for Banjul South has announced her intention to lead the People’s Progressive Party (PPP). Her announcement came few days after the party encouraged its bonafide members to apply for six unoccupied positions within the party.

The vacant positions are Secretary General and Party Leader, Deputy Secretary General and Party Leader, National President, Deputy National President, National Treasurer, and Deputy National Treasurer.

“I shall be running for the SG and party Leader of the PPP. Vote for change,” Fatoumatta Touma Njie announced on her Facebook.

The former banker is among dozens of MPs who frequently speak in parliaments on issues before them regarding national matters.

This comes as the then Secretary General and Party Leader Mohammadou Papa Njie resigned and took up an ambassadorial position from The Gambian leader Adama Barrow to the Republic of Nigeria.

Mr Njie’s action was confronted with many critics from the oppositions – many of whom lashed out at him. But PPP top echelon strongly defended him and described his move as for the interest of the nation. The party has also declared its full support to President Adama Barrow – as they turned down contesting in the 2021 presidential election – citing they are strategizing the party.
