APRC not desperate to elect flag-bearer

By Landing Colley

Members of the opposition APRC party have said at their weekend national congress that they are not in desperation to elect flag-bearer as they are focusing on ways to develop the party.

More supports are being hold for former President Yahya Jammeh who has been living in Equatorial Guinea since 2017. Still supporters of the party are with believe that he will return to the country before 4th December presidential election.

APRC supporters chanted praises in Jammeh’s name at their congress and said “Babili gave us food and water and brought a radical socio-economic development to The Gambia.”

Speaking to The Voice in an interview, Doudou  Jah deputy spokesperson of APRC said “we are yet to select any flag-bearer, the party is focusing to achieve its aim and objective prior the election and to raise fund to prepare for election.”

He said that once those are achieved then they will decide whether to elect a flag-bearer but the party is yet to do that even if that is to happen the party will organize extra ordinary session in order to selection a flag-bearer.

According to him, they always elect their flag-bearer three months before election and this has been a tradition within the party and it has been happening for almost two decades.

“This has no connection with the coming back of Jammeh from Equatorial Guinea when the time is due, we will proceed to elect the flag-bearer. If the people (APRC Militant) elect him as the flag-bearer then he will be the flag-bearer, it depends whether he will be able to return and contest but if people wants him to be the flag-bearer then he will be the flag-bearer,” he said.

Speaking on the allegations made at Truth Reconciliation Reparation Commission (TRRC) against former president Yahya AJJ Jammeh, he said “Yahya Jammeh is just an individual and whatever they are saying is just an allegation yet to be proven and a competent court of law will be able to determine whether he is guilty or innocent.”

He said that APRC party belongs to Gambians and the party is still moving in Jammeh’s absent.

He therefore called on the Independent Electoral Commission to be well prepared and conduct the coming presidential election free and fair as it expected.
