UN Ibn Chambas Praises Foreign Minister Tangara

The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, and head of UNOWAS, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, on Friday 26 February 2021 praised Foreign Minister Dr.Mamadou Tangara for the great job he is rendering to the country and urged him to continue doing so.

“We have been in this reform process of The Gambia since 2015 to 2016,” said Chambas “and we would like to return gratitude for the tenacity and commitment made during this process.”  He made these remarks during an audience with the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mamadou Tangara in his office in Banjul.

On June 20th 2019, the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres conferred an Award on Dr. Mamadou Tangara for the role he played in preventing humanitarian catastrophe in The Gambia during the 2016 political impasse.

Dr. Chambas expressed the support of the United Nations to the ongoing transitional justice process in the country while calling for more efforts to be employed in the consolidation of democracy and in the fight against poverty and Covid -19.

He described the work of the Truth Reconciliation and Reparation Commission (TRRC) as a colossal success. He said the Chair of the Commission, Dr. Lamin Sise is a highly reputable person and his work and that of other Commissioners has made observers admire the work of the TRRC.

For his part, the Honourable Foreign Minister, Dr. Mamadou Tangara, commended H.E. Chambas for the great sacrifice and service he has rendered to the world and Africa in particular.

“We would like to thank you profoundly for the support you have given to The Gambia before, during and after the political impasse. You worked a lot for The Gambia and without your advice we would not have been here today,” Foreign Minister Dr. Tangara tells UN Mohamed Ibn Chambas.
