The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has taken journalists from both the print and electronic media through the nation’s electoral process to help them better understand the electoral processes and accurate reporting and dissemination to the public.
The meeting was held on Thursday at Sir Dawda Kairaba International Conference Center, Bijilo
This is the third dialogue of the independent Electoral Commission after dealing with political parties and civil organization on electoral process.
Speaking at the event, Alieu Mommar Njai, chairman of IEC dilated on the importance of the meeting while elaborated on the important role of the media both local and international.
He urged the media houses to give accurate information and be willing to seek for clarification on any issue regarding the election processing.
Still, in an open discussion, the commission informed journalists on political party registration as 17 political parties have officially registered, three (3) applications are in process to be registered as well as four (4) independent aspiring to register in the forthcoming election.
Yet the electoral commission is not well certain with date to start the voter registration. Nonetheless they will ensure that the date set for the election will not change despite the delay in voter registration.
According to the commission, they are well-focus on conducting the election with the current constitution, but warned and condemned associations sensitizing public on electoral process using their logo without their consent while they encouraged full participation of all Gambians as election is every ones business.
