Germany plans to deport another batch of Gambian migrant in April

German government is planning to send another batch of Gambian migrants back home in early April, public relations officer for Gambia Refugee Association has told a local FM radio.

At least four flights of Gambian migrants had been sent home from Europe especially from Germany since last year.

“The second week of April they are trying to organise another flight [but] we don’t know (if) this will take place or not,” Yaya Sonko said.

Meanwhile, he said his association in partnership with some German rights groups are engaging the government of German on the issue – and as well “we are also putting Gambia government to pressure.”

Experts expressed concerns about the mass deportation of Gambians in Europe amid the pandemic – as they said it could lead to increase in crimes because many of the deportees will be left jobless.

The Gambia, a country that depends hugely on international donors and remittances from its citizens in the Diaspora, is still among the world’s poorest countries – a huge number of its population live below the World Bank poverty line.

Deportation of Gambian in Europe has been shredded since 2017.
