The straight-talking lawyer has again yelled out on Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for failing to conduct a voter registration, describing the electoral body as ‘sloppy’.
Speaking to The Voice reporter in an interview, Lawyer Assan Martin, said: “IEC cannot be reformed unless we have a new government and the current IEC is just sloppy because people are not still hopeful whether the registration will go ahead.”
According to him, voter registration should have been done within a framework of time to allow at least 95% of all Gambians to vote, adding that “where are we going to start from because it is not a one-day process.”
“This will be a nightmare in The Gambia democracy if IEC postpone the forthcoming presidential election. They might be held responsible and blame if the country get in to flame,” he emphasised
He continued that there is a failure of institutional governance in the country and failure to respect the mandate of the public which led everything in to messy and now they (IEC) are left with few months to solve the problem.
Lawyer Martin further added that voter requirement still stands with 1997 electoral degree and the coming presidential election in early December 2021 is very crucial as it is an election that defines how Gambia should move as a country.
However, he urged the IEC to be transparent in the forthcoming presidential election as “we want a free, fair and transparent election to take place.”
