Jarra West MP Calls For Transparency On Election Bill

Honorable Kadjaly Fofana, lawmaker for Jarra West has called on authorities to open up and be transparent on the election bill for MPs during National Assembly sittings in Banjul.

“Regarding the bill in as much they have subject matter specialist, they should also open up to all the members of the assembly. There are members among us who have work in the electoral system for long and have experience in the issue. This is an important bill,” he said.

According to him, the bill supposed to be tabled since because all Gambians are waiting for it.

He said the bill seeks to repeal the election act and create a new electoral act, saying it is “one of the reasons why Gambians came together to change a government so that we can have a good electoral system in the country.”

Honorable Dawda Jallow, Minister of Justice said: “election laws conform or must conform to the need and aspirations of electorates in a true democratic society, while fit the full participation or eligible citizens through casting their votes.”

“We have made a statement to this body that the scheduled attach to this bill on the bonded copy that was first circulated is in error and been corrected,” he said.

Halifa Sallah, also said sovereignty of a country resides on its citizens to vote and to be voted for in elections, adding that the bill must be compared to elections act and the principles is for free and fair elections.
