Politicians condemn Busumbala murder-suicide

Three Gambian political figures have reacted to Busumbala murder-suicide as they called for a drastic stance against rape and its related issues in the country.
Top politicians’ reactions come a day after Zeizon Gomez was alleged to have killed himself and a 24-year-old student of St Peters, Marie Mendy, after alleged attempted rape. Dozens of Gambians have since taken to social media to condemn the act.

Police have opened an investigation into their death as they deployed heavy security personnel to the scene. “We can confirm the murder suspect of Mary Mendy and Zeizon Gomez,” Police spokesman Lamin Njie said.

Meanwhile, Lawyer Ousianou Darboe, leader of the United Democratic Party said on his twitters that: “I have just learnt of the disturbing incident that happened earlier today in Busumbala. Rape has no place in our Gambia I join all well-meaning Gambians in condemning this gruesome act. May God grant the late Marie eternal rest.”

Dr Ismaila Ceesay, leader of Citizens’ Alliance also wrote on his twitter: “The scourge of sexual and Gender-Based Violence experienced in the form of rape and other forms of sexual abuse must be eradicated. We must speak up against this evil and the culture of silence that enables it. More Education and strong laws needed to fight this cancer. #SpeakUpMen.”

Oley Dibba-Wadda – a senior member of the United Democratic Party said the rampant rise in rape is getting scary.”

“There should be zero tolerance on rape in The Gambia. We can no longer stand aside and wait for “innocent until proven guilty” verdict. The psychological aftermath is equally damaging,” she said.
