The secretary general of All People’s Party, who flew back to the country from his United Kingdom trip, Thursday, has hit out at President Adama Barrow and his government for what he called ‘neglecting Gambians.’
Speaking to reporters at the Banjul International Airport, Dr. Bai Biram Jagne assured the APP government would change the nation’s situation, adding that the party will rule according to the desires of The Gambians.
“We will not dwell in vanity and every member of the party is equal,” he said, adding “as we all know how Gambians are suffering and I stand for them to worry no more.”
“The country is going backward, this government is supposed to be creating a new dispensation as it was brought by the coalition for change,” he said.
According to him, The Gambia is his party’s first priority and that “we will stand by that because we all see the outcome of the former coalition. Measures will be taken so that history will not repeat itself.”
He said if Gambians vote-in APP there will be changed because “we are not politicians but technocrats.”
He promised to ensure that every civil servant declare his or her assets to entrench fight against corruption and promote transparency within the government.
“I think the government should do better and lead by example. If a leader is a cheat, what do you think the ministers will do they will also copy,” Dr Jaigne said.
Meanwhile, he expressed dismay over the rejection of the draft constitution saying “using the 1997 constitution is tragic because it was changed 52 times to suit the former dictator and cannot rule us again.”
“116 million was thrown just to draft the constitution and finally rejected, we have a president who doesn’t care about its citizens,” he continued.
He said that the IEC failed to establish facilities for the registration process and the rejection of the diaspora who contributed massively to the country’s economy at the total of D28 billion.
The problem is the government, it is not COVID-19, this has been there for long and the present regime made it worse. More people are dying, security is in turmoil and armed robbers are everywhere, he pointed out.
