The Caritas Gambia in partnership with Rotary Ireland has donated two hundred and ninety [290] Bbcycles to schools in the Lower River Region.
Speaking, Francis Mendy the Director of Caritas Gambia, said they are donating bicycles to schools in other to complement government efforts and help to improve students’ performance in schools
“Our aim is always to contribute to the lively hood of people in the Gambia, through agriculture, health, education, migration and among many other things,” he said.
He expressed hope that the donated bicycles will go a long way in helping the students in their academy, saying this is the first time they are donating to schools in LRR as they normally donate to the greater Banjul Area and hoping that more school will benefit in the future.
For her part, Dr.Sophie Ndow, Vice Chair of Caritas Board of Directors, said Catholic Church in the Gambia through Caritas has significantly contributed and continue to contribute to social transformation through a panoply of initiatives in education, healthcare, migration, water sanitation and hygiene, food production system, peace building Among others.
She said many Gambian students around the country still have dire transport needs children in particular struggle with mobility constraints in their quest to access education, health and recreation.
She also said the donated materials will help to save time of traveling to school, improve students’ performance and increase self-esteem especially among girls.
Jerreh Sanyang, Deputy Permanent Secretary Finance at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, comment the Caritas Gambia for responding strongly to the education sector in the Gambia and other important areas. DPS Sanyang the Bicycles will help to complete the government effort and help the beneficiaries students to report to school in time especially for those students coming from far distance to school, he thanks them for the gesture and looking for more partnership.
Also speaking, Honourable Yahya Gassama, chairman of the National Assembly select committee on education, joined speakers to thanks Caritas Gambia for good work they have been doing always in the country, especially in the education sector, with these Bicycles students can Easley get to classroom on time.
Momodou G Jallow Regional Education Director of region 4 received the Bicycles on behalf of the entire region, and express gratitude to the donors and assured them the materials will put into good use of what it main for.
