National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) and partners last week ended its ten-day nationwide civic and voter education campaign in different regions.
The campaign was supported by UNDP Electoral Cycle Support and Government of The Gambia.
The Theme for the campaign was Voters Card, a Key to Your Franchise. The sensitisation targeted 40 communities in North Bank, Lower River and West Coast Regions and it formed part of the second round of the NCCE’s campaign on the theme.
Ansumana Sisay Senior Civic Education Officer dilated on citizenship saying 1997 constitution provides provision for citizens to acquire citizenship and therefore called on people to ensure timely regularization of their status.
He noted that voter registration and election of candidate contribute to strengthen democracy as it will enable them to exercise the franchise. He said respect for rule of law and human rights are key indicators to democracy.
Kebb aGassama, Village Development Committee chairman in Kerewan thanked NCCE for their support to enlighten the public and noted that it would contribute to the maintenance of peace and stability.
He used the moment to remind the inhabitants to be proactive and come out to register.
Foday Kumba Fatty, a community leader in Kerewan said the sensitisation would enlighten the public and contribute to peaceful voter registration.
Ansumana Yarbou NCCE official said knowledge is keys and therefore civic education is a constitutional requirement as the forum was meant educate the public on their civic and constitutional rights.
Muhammed Kanuteh another official of NCCE said the sensitisation is part of their mandate to enlighten the public on their constitutional requirement.
