Thousands of people receive AstraZeneca dose, Ministry starts second dose

The Ministry of Health has started administering the second dose to people who took their first dose due to low stock of COVID-19 vaccines – as thousands people have already received the AstraZeneca dose.

“Please note that the second dose is necessary in order to obtain maximum immunological protection against the virus. Therefore, those who have taken their first dose are urged to return for their second shot,” the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the ministry said in its daily report: “As of 28th May 2021, 29,148 and 4,671 people received the 1st and 2nd doses of AstraZeneca Vaccine respectively.

However, despite the ongoing mass vaccination, the ministry has warned against complacency and encouraged people to come forward and receive their anti-coronavirus doses – to help fight against the virus spread.

Last week, cases of the India variant were reported in the country – taking the total number of coronavirus cases confirmed in the country to 5,993.

“They are all males, aged 17 & 32 years old. A total of 500 new laboratory test results received (38 from MRCG and 462 from NPHL) of these, 2 new samples tested positive, representing a 0.4% test positivity rate.

“The country currently has 2 people (travellers from India) in hotel quarantine, 34 active cases and a crude case-fatality ratio of 3%. So far 4,738 Rapid diagnostic tests were conducted at the Airport for travellers as of 28th May 2021. o of these, only 2 tested positive for both RDT and PCR,” the ministry’s report said.

The report added: “: As of 20th May 2021, 82 new clients received Psychological First Aid (PFA) Services provided by MoH, Department of Social Welfare (DSW) and Paradise Foundation, thus bringing the number of clients attended to 1,829 since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

“People who have had their first shot can return to any of the vaccination sites for their second dose. To locate vaccination sites, please call 1025. All efforts are being made to ensure additional stocks of vaccines are available in the country as soon as possible to ensure the continuity and success of the vaccination campaign.
