The National Disaster Management Agency together with KMC coordinators Thursday conducted a site visit to families within the Kanifing Municipal Council affected by the heavy windstorm of Wednesday.
Speaking to the media during the visit, head of Drammeh Kunda compound, Lamin Drammeh explained the damages the heavy windstorm done to his household.
Lamin said “this happened at night, around 12 and 1am while I was sitting in my verandah. When it started it blew off the roof edge and threw it away while the other parts of the roof fell inside the compound.”
He narrated that it is only him and immediate family – wife and children staying in the compound, while he later called his brother residing in Siffoe to assist him.
He added that everything in the house got destroyed but quickly gave thanks to God for sparing his life, wife and children. He as well extended appreciation to the Ward Counselor, Karamo Ceesay for his quick response and survey of the damages.
However he is now facing challenges as regarding to feeding and sheltering saying “It’s my neighbor who gives me a room but I am actually not having any food with me here only my pocket money is with me but the rice is wet”.
He therefore called for assistant from government, council; NGOs among other people to come to his rescue and others affected families.
Meanwhile, the municipality coordinator, Ngange Jeng said the windstorm hit the entire country “not only Kanifing Municipal Council.”
He noted that it is the rapid assessment that the agency is looking at for now and after this “we will come again to conduct a detail assessment. Several houses have been destroyed and even live, too. And some sustain injuries in other regions.”
