A high Court judge in Banjul is expected to deliver the most anticipated judgement in the alleged protracted murder trial involving the former AFPRC junta member and one-time minister of local government and lands, Yankuba Touray today.
Touray is being tried on a single muder charge for almost two years now for his alleged participation in the killing of his late cabinet colleague and finance minister, Ousman ‘Koro’ Ceesay who mysteriously died in June 1995.
Investigators alleged that Yankuba Touray in June 1995 at his residence in Kololi used a pestle and hit the late Ousman ‘Koro’ Ceesay. Touray however throughout the trial and his appearance before the Truth Commission maintained his innocent, citing constitutional immunity.
Several junta members including Edward Singhatey and Peter Singhatey where adversely mentioned by scores of witnesses that appeared before the Truth Commission, but Mr. Touray alone is being tried for the murder by the state since 2019 following his refusal to testify before the Truth Commission which followed his arrest and subsequence prosecution.
The trial judge, Justice Ebrima Jaiteh last month declared to deliver his final judgment after both the prosecution and defence adopted their written brief of arguments.
During the two-year marathon legal battle, the state represented by the acting director of public prosecution, AM Yusuf presented nine witnesses before closing his case while defence also called three witnesses including the accused, Yankuba Touray.
