BAC gives D500,000 to windstorm victims

 Brikama Area Council (BAC) has given humanitarian aid to victims of early this month windstorm disaster amounting five hundred thousand dalasis in West Coast Region.

At least 10 people including a 5-year-old boy died while displaced 1500 people and left more than 3000 people seriously affected. The disaster attracted much concerns among Gambians and prompted the government to launch an emergency relief fund for the victims. North Bank Region is most affected region, where 9 of the people died.

On Wednesday, 28th July, Officials of Brikama Area Council led by the government West Coast Region Lamin Sanneh delivered the token to the chairman of the Brikama Area Council Sherffo Sonko, amount to be shared among the victims.

“In response to the July 7, windstorm which also hit the region, the Council has today provided the sum of GMD500,000.00 (Five Hundred thousand dalasis) as humanitarian assistance to support the people affected by the windstorm. The windstorm caused significant destruction to public infrastructure and individual properties across the region resulting to the displacement of Families, injuries and two deaths. As at today, a total of 2,560 households are affected with a population of 39,646 persons,” the council said in a statement.

“The occasion was presided over by the honourable chairman and attended by the BAC CEO and Senior staff, Honourable Deputy chairman and Ward Councillors, Regional Governor, NDMA Executive Director and team, National Assembly Desk Officer for West Coast Region, District Chiefs and Representatives of Partner Institutions in the region,” it added.
