National Assembly members have debated a bill that if approved will guide titled National Assembly service bill 2021.
Honorable Bakary Njie, member for Bundungka Kunda said the assembly effort is being compromised and undermined or unable to execute their jobs accurately.
“The bill is here and making sure that is passing and many circumstances have passed year ago and we felt our hands are tied and dance to the tunes of the Minister of Finance that there is no fund. This is one of the most important bills that should be corrected since and the objective of the bill is for the National Assembly members to effectively perform their duties,” he said.
Honorable Fatoumatta Njie, member for Banjul north also said the constitution guarantees participatory democratic that reflects the undiluted choice of the people.
“The function of the arm of government has been clearly defined their independence amply secured with adequate checks and balances. This assembly is independent and most of us if not all have executed the independence of this parliament by operating effectively,” she added
He went on that the assembly should provide all the facilities members need saying the constitution states that the executive is the government most of us believe we are part of the government and that is one of the problems.
She added: “we stand here instead of representing our constituencies, we defend the executive.”
“Why are we finding it difficult to give power to the people? The bill is very clear that National Assembly service bill. National Assembly service is an organ and arm of the house, Section (30) is the most important part in the constitution basic education should be free and acknowledgeable to everyone,” Honorable Sedia Jatta member for Wuli West said.
Honorable Majanko Samusa, nominated member said members should talk about the bill and not another issue like basic education is not part of the bill and also, he said, the speaker should be fair if not it will create problem in the house.
Honorable Kebba K Barrow, majority leader noted that the constitution is the supreme law of this house all members have the right to code of the constitution.
