The Governor of North Bank Region has pleaded with Gambian youth to put behind their political differences and unite for development.
Governor Lamin Saidykhan who was speaking to a group of youth in Kerewan during their nationwide tour in a bid to educate youth on participation in politics, a programme sponsored by UNDP through its #Peacebuilding#Fund.
“We all have a party that we support, but these political differences shouldn’t make us hate each other or engage in conflict,” he said
He added that The Gambia belongs to all Gambians, but the young people bear the greatest responsibility to nurture the peace and tranquility that exist in the country.
“The peace of this country is in your hands, you constitute more than 60 percent of the population and you are the consequent that is mostly targeted in terms of conflict,” the NBR Governor explained.
However, Governor Saidykhan noted that the government of the Gambia is committed to the development and empowerment of young people and is working very hard daily in addressing the challenges that exist.
He therefore challenged the young people to work together in the promotion of peace and good governance in the country, while fully participate in politics.
Omar Bah, Program Officer, Peace and Development, National Youth Council said: “As parents, it’s important for us to talk to our children about peace and its importance to development. Parents should also listen to young people about peace; they may have ideas and innovations that can enhance the maintenance of peace in the society and country as a whole.”
