One of Gambia’s presidential aspirants has raised doubt about the country’s development saying the government of President Barrow seems not committed to fight corruption in the country.
Kitabu Fatty, also a top comedian said: “This KMC issue should be an eye opener to every citizen in this country. The corruption in this our small country is getting out of hand from the central government to the local government, corruption continues to prevail. How can we develop as a nation when few people are enjoying the taxpayers’ money?”
“The Ministry [for Local Government] and the [KMC] Mayor should work together and make sure the corrupt officials are dragged to court,” Kitabu Fatty, the leader and Secretary General of the Progressive Democratic Party [PDP], stated.
Another politician, MC Cham Jr, the Youth President of The Gambia Democratic Congress [GDC] said the Minister for Lands and Local Government as well as the suspended KMC CEO Martin should be ashamed of themselves.
“The CEO confessed to defrauding the accounts of the staff welfare Association and the Minister is in solidarity with her by encouraging her to go back to work.
“But this is essentially the characteristics of the Barrow government. They are corrupt to the core and support corrupt officials. The fact that President Barrow can retain and promote officials implicated by the Janneh Commission indicates that he is proud to do corruption and encourages [it],” he alleged.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Lands, Local Government and Religious Affairs in a letter urged the Kanifing Municipal Council to rescind its suspension and recommendation for the termination of the services of its CEO and Finance Director, following their alleged involvement in the D12 million scandal but the council replied that it would uphold the decision.
