As part of its efforts aimed at mitigating the impact of climate change, Beakanyang recently organized a tree planting exercise at Nyakoi Kerewan in Wuli West District of Upper River Region.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Tumani Danjo, Head of Programs at Beakanyang thanked the community members for their large turnout at the exercise.
He encouraged community members to take good care of the planted trees while reaffirming Beakanyang’s commitment to continue working closely with communities in the region and beyond to mitigating the effects of climate change.
He disclosed that annually they plant hundreds of trees in various communities and help provide fencing materials to ensure their protection and high survival rate.
Mr. Danjo thanked the community of Kerewan and the Regional Forestry Office in Basse for their continued collaboration and partnership over the years.
He further urged the members of the community to ensure the trees are protected from animals and bush fire, while recommending their continued support and watering when required.
“Planting of more trees is key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and would also lead to boosting livelihoods,” Danjo stated.
In her remarks, Mrs. Jaka Dibassy, the president of Kerewan Beakanyang Women Kafo thanked Beakanyang organisation under the able leadership of its executive director Mr. Nfamara Jawneh for its continue efforts in restoration of the environment.
“Over the years, we have learnt a lot about climate change and its effects thanks to Beakanyang and its partners,” she said.
She used the opportunity to thanked the youth of the village for actively participating in this year’s tree planting while urging them to continue working alongside the women.
For her part, Naba Jabby. secretary of Kerewan Beakanyang thanked BKK for not only helping them to take local actions to mitigate the impact of climate change over the years but for also enlightened them about the changing climate.
“I can bet if all community based organization could emulate Beakanyang in the fight against climate changes the impact on us will be significantly reduced,” she said.
Speaking earlier, Mr. Fenna Sillah representing the Alkalo of Kerewan at the event applauded Beakanyang for its commitment towards environmental restoration and preservation.
“We are all suffering as a result of climate change as we continue to experience erratic rain fall leading to poor harvest, rising temperature, flooding just to name a few,” he lamented.
Mr. Muhammed Sillah, the youth leader in Kerewan thanked Beakanyang for the work they have being doing with the women of his village.
He said Beakanyang intervention in his community has started to change many lives and they are grateful to the organization for its life changing projects and programmes.
He finally promised Beakanyang leadership about their collaboration and willingness to work hand in glove with Beakanyang through its Kerewan chapter.
Meanwhile, as part of the exercise over 100 trees of various species were planted at the community woodland garden established by Beakanyang few years ago. Similar exercises are expected to be carried out in other communities in Wuli in coming days.
