Njawara Agricultural Training Centre (NATC) with support from Global Environment Facility Project under UNDP small grant known as Rural Youths Enterprise Against Climate Change has trained 20 women fish processor on hygiene and sanitation and methods of fish smoking.
Mama Manneh, Executive Director of Njawara Agricultural Training Centre said: “the support aimed at addressing acute shortage of fishing boat and most importantly to encourage youths to take up fishing as livelihood development.”
He noted that the training is keys for fish processor and would contribute to enhance health and well-being of the population.
Buya Jammeh, Chairman of fishing association said the support was in form of fishing boat engine, cold store and live jackets, and the boat would enhance youths’ participation in fishing sector and boost income.
For her part Sutay Sonko President of Women Kafo described the gesture from Njawara Agricultural Training Centre as timely, noting that the provision of fishing boat would increase fish supply chain. And notably train women on fish processor on best practices. The women called for more support for fishing sector in the form of tricycle to facilitate transportation of fresh fish and fish products to consumers.
Kaddy Sarr, lead trainer from Kerewan thanked management of Njawara Agricultural Training Centre for the foresight, noting that it would help women in Kekuta Kunda to adopt best practices value addition to fish smoking.
