The TRRC former lead counsel, Essa Faal, has assured to campaign with issue of victims of former president Yahya AJJ Jammeh to ensure they get justice, as he paid a courtesy call to the victims’ centre in Kotu.
“I have made a personal commitment to make the issue of the victims of our 22 years of dictatorship a central course in my campaign. In fact, this is one of the reasons why I am running for presidency because I have no confidence, zero confidence that the report of the TRRC would see the light of the day under this government,” he said.
“They [Barrow government] told us that because they are going to bed with the party of the perpetrator and in their presence the party is telling them that this report is going under the dustbin,” he added.
He expressed dismay about the condition of Mile 2 prison, describing it as “one of the biggest atrocities that are happening to our people.”
“It is a terrible state of dilapidation being incarcerated in that place is a human rights violation to an individual in the name of punishment, to sleep in stinking toilet is a crime. We are not talking about all the terrible things that happened together,” he continued.
Meanwhile, he said, it is the responsibility of Gambians to ensure justice is delivered to the victims of former president Yahya Jammeh, as things that happened in the country were shameful and dirty.
“It is the responsibility of every single Gambian to do everything possible to ensure justice for these victims. If we don’t do that, we will be failing in our responsibility to them, and any individual who participate in enforcing or reinforcing the impunity that we now face is betraying the aspirations of the Gambian people,” he said.
