Farmers in Sami District of the Central River Region North (CRR) have lamented about the poor harvest this year season, the reduction is attributed to among others reasons like the long dry at the beginning of the rain season.

The farmers called on government and partners for urgent help and linked the poor harvest to shortage of rainfall.

“What we harvest for the year can’t even feed our families for three good months, the poor rainfall has seriously affected major crops grown in The Gambia, which is on usual,” Momodou Ghano, a farmer from Karantaba Toro said.

“If the Government didn’t come to our aid and help the Gambians farmers, many are expected to face food insecurity in 2022 and feeding will be top challenges for many. Nothing is good in this year rainy season, I growth three different plot of farms early millet. But I did not harvest nothing out of it, the whole country farmers are affected let the government and partners take note and help us,” he appealed.

Omar Sey also a farmer, said: “75% of our groundnut is very low yielding this year, as harvesting is in progress, we are very worry of its outcome. I am not speaking for my village but for the entire Gambian farmers, as everyone is affected by one way or the other.”

“I wish the Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Amie Fabureh will come to the ground right now and see by herself what farmers are currently harvesting in their farmers, the groundnut is very low yielding,” he said.

Hawa Jawo a Rice grower farmer thanked The Voice Newspaper for given them a space to express their feeling about the year rainy season.

According to her, at some point, the rain was too much which led to the spoilt of their crop and falling of too many houses.
