Fish dealers at the Bakau market have called on the government to build a storage facility for them to avoid fish spoilage.
Abdoulie Kanteh a middleman said: “we need proper fish storage as many of our fish are being spoiled on daily basis. Our cold room is not working for almost a year and we have lodged our complaints to the fishery ministry but nothing has been done yet.”
“We used to buy ice blocks from some of the ice block vendors or sometimes go to Banjul to buy ice blocks in bags. One bag cost D150 and we have to pay a transport fare too,” he said.
“We want government to renovate our cold room so that we can preserve our fish for a long period of time without getting spoiled. The Ice blocks they used to buy from the local women do not use to stay long before it melts sometimes you might not. It’s a big lost to us he said. Imagine you buy a basket of fish for D3,000 and all that became waste because you could not get an ice block to preserve it,” he added.
He explained that most of the boats operating in the sea are owned by the Senegalese saying
