President Adama Barrow has promised to unify the polarized Gambian society for the development of the country and promised to bring back the rejected draft constitution.
Barrow who got re-elected into office by Gambians is faced with an uphill task to unify the deep polarize Gambian communities since the long-term ruler Yahya Jammeh fled into exile after losing 2016 polls to President Barrow.
Speaking to the nation’s journalists at Statehouse, Barrow told reporters: “Thank you, I think since I came to power in 2017, the country was more divided than now. We tried to unify The Gambian people as I always said: I will be the president for all Gambians and also we will try to make sure some, even the people we disagreed with, we will try to work with them in the future.”
“But we are open, we know this is not about personal issues, this is about principles, this about The Gambia and we should all understand that if you are a Gambian, it’s everybody’s responsibility to contribute to national development.
“You are not working for Adama Barrow, nobody is working for me that’s why this election, I don’t think there is a loser. We are all winners because it’s The Gambia that’s important. So, we will do everything possible to bring people together Barrow added.
Meanwhile, Barrow has reaffirmed his commitment to bring back the rejected draft constitution before the next presidential election in 2026.
“I am a big fan of term limit and since I was launching the project that was part of my statement. I am a big fan of absolute majority. As I said, this thing is not the president issue. It has gone through processes, the document got to the National Assembly and they disagreed on it and we negotiated through mediation…
“I assure you; I want the document to be part of my projects [and] I assure you; you will have a new constitution before the next presidential election. No doubt about that and I will make sure it happens,” President promised Gambians.
He also promised to continue with his infrastructural development policy saying The Gambians re-elected with task to complete.
“I will still continue the infrastructural development. As I said, no infrastructural, no development. I have meant the reason,” he said.
