Gambian sports and football enthusiasts and administrators have reacted to the dead of Brikama United’s female defender Jankeh Bojang, who passed away on Tuesday afternoon in Foni Kanfenda where she was believed to be undergoing treatment.
According to statement from Brikama United, Jankeh has been battling with illness for a long time as she missed the whole of last season for the team before she was pronounced dead on Tuesday afternoon. She was laid to rest on the same day at 5pm in Casa Kunda.
The president of the Gambia Football Federation Lamin Kaba Bajo described Jankey’s demise as a monumental loss to Gambian football, while describing her as a talented, disciplined and hardworking defender.
Mr. Bajo who went on behalf of his Executive Committee and staff to send their deepest condolences to the family of the bereaved and Brikama United Football Club also prayed for the departed soul to rest in eternal peace in Jannatul Firdaus.
He also prayed for Allah to give the family the fortitude to bear what he described as an irreparable loss.
Alieu Wenger, a keenly women football follower wrote on social media that this is another lost to Gambian sports, while praying for Allah’s forgiveness on the departed soul and grant her Jannatul Firdaus.
Muhammed Drammeh, a former classmate to Jankeh Bojang said he was a rare gem, noting that they were in the same class but he rarely saw her (Jankeh) talk, while praying for Allah’s mercy on her soul.
Ebou Faye, GFF 2nd Vice president also wrote “my condolences. What a lost to our football. A very bright and talented young girl. May her soul rest in eternal peace”
Alhasana Danjo said “she was a very respectful girl and I have seen her in so many times praying in the Box-Ba during training”
Meanwhile, Brikama United Football Club further said that “Jankey is beautiful both in and out and if discipline could prevent someone from death then she would have lived forever because she was hundred percent disciplined.”
One of her colleague teammates explained in the club website that she respected everyone at the club both teammates
