Honorable Sulayman Saho, the National Assembly memeber for Central Badibou, has said the Supreme Court judgement against United Democratic Party is ‘unfair.’
The lawmaker’s reaction comes after the country’s top court struck out an election petition case against President Adama Barrow and the Independent Electoral Commission over December presidential election.
Speaking to The Voice, he said: ‘’I expected the Chief Justice to allow the due process of law to take place and if the evidences are not sufficient enough or not substantial issues then he can rule against the petition.”
He said to his surprise Supreme Court made the ruling by not allowing the hearing to be done reason best known to them.
“I am not happy with the ruling and I was optimistic that if UDP win at the court everybody will celebrate the justice system of The Gambia. If the party did not fulfil the requirement of the Supreme Court when filing they could have been given another chance to make it right or be charged. However, in my own analysis the reason given is not convincing enough to struck out this important petition which is of concern in the interest of Gambian people,” he argued.
Sheikhna Faal, press secretary of GAP also said he’s not sure about the technicalities the Supreme Court mentioned was the reason for rejecting the petition.
“UDP did what they thought is right and supposed to be done and the Supreme Court had the final decision, whatever comes next will be their decision which shall be either they appeal or accept the verdict,” he said.
Although, he said “due process was given for both parties petition to be heard in the Supreme Court. I do not want to believe that there was something fishy in the whole process all I want to believe is the rule of law won at the end of the day.”
