Artists in Alliance for Arts and Culture will organise drama and cultural competition among 16 junior and senior schools within Kanifing Municipality on 22 February 2022.
This drama is meant to promote and create awareness on Arts and Culture in Schools.
The February event will be the first pilot phase for inter schools but a successful one was held at ABC Upper and Lower Basic School in December 2021.
Speaking to Saloum Sheriff Janko, program coordinator of Artists in Alliance for Arts and Culture for regional competitions, said: “the event will expose Gambia to the world about the rich culture and synonymous to the warm welcoming of tourists.”
“The first pilot phase was held at ABC Junior Secondary School were several cultural groups participated in the event, also a Christmas dinner was organized for 40 needy children this was to encourage them to go to school and also to participate in Arts and Culture in School. Also, in September we also organized our first Kids Have Dream in Arts at Tallinding, Medina where kids showcase their talents in drumming and dancing. In the whole of the performance, first school will go with an award and a cash price of D20, 000, while second and third will go with D15, 000, and D10, 000 respectively and the participating schools will also be awarded with a cash price of D5000,” he explained.
According to him, the program seeks to also help to eradicate force marriage as well as the education of the girl child and retention of female pupils in schools, saying that is why it is necessary to sensitize the students on their rights.
“The event is part of our project, Building Our Future Project is which is about sensitizing students in Arts and Culture and also, they can be aware of their rights as well as helping them to become great achievers in future. The sensitization focuses on Promoting in various areas of Arts and Culture, which include performing Arts (music, dance, drama creative Arts, drawing, sculpting, leather work, weaving, creative writing, Bakery, Tie-Dye, Batik, Fashion and Designing, Photography, Pottery Printing Making, Doll Making, Instrument Making Carving, among other” he added.
