6 Military personnel given bail after return from exile in Equatorial Guinea

Six military personnel, who returned from five years of self-exile, with former president Yahya Jammeh in Equatorial Guinea, have been given a summary bail amid police investigation.

The six military personnel are Lieutenant Colonel Wandifa Barrow, Lieutenant Colonel Amadou Joof, Lieutenant Kaddy Colley, Sergeant Lamin B Jammeh, Sergeant Lamin Nyassi and Sergeant Landing Jarju.

“The six military personnel were also taken to the police headquarters in Banjul to be processed and put on bail. They are all released from police on Tuesday and they are to report back this Wednesday morning by 11am to the Crime Management Coordination office for further engagement,” Ebrima G Sankareh, spokesman for the government said.

He added that: “So, it can also be recalled that four civilians Awa Jammeh, Mariatou Jammeh, Almamy Kujabi, Arabiatou Camara and two children were released earlier.”

“It’s true, at the closure of business last night general Badjie was ordered to be detained at Mile 2 prisons by a High Court Judge. In fact, let me give you the names people who are detained at Mile 2 prisons.

Meanwhile, top general of former president Yahya Jammeh and two other military officers have been detained at the State Central Prisons, Mile 2, Banjul.

Lt Gen Saul Badjie, Major Landing Tamba and Warrant Officer 1 Musa Badjie and six other military personnel and some civilians returned to The Gambia last December after spending five years in exile with Jammeh in Equatorial Guinea.

Lt Gen Saul Badjie has been adversely incriminated in the TRRC finding for committing gross human rights violations including killings and tortures.

Meanwhile, Ebrima Sankareh said: “It’s true at the closure of business last night General Badjie was ordered to be detained at Mile 2 prisons by a High Court judge. In fact, let me give you the names of people who are detained at Mile 2 prison. Yes, just the surface information is that Lt Gen Saul Badjie, Major Landing Tamba and Warrant Officer 1 Musa Badjie were ordered to be detained at the Mile 2 prisons and they were processed at the Mile 2 prison, they were read their rights as prisoners and each was sent to a cell. They are at the remand wing,” he disclosed
