United Kingdom-based foundation, Joint Undertaken in Community Education (JUICE) has donated 700 Euro equivalent to D47,000.00 to The Gambia Prisons Service.
The donation aimed at contributing towards strengthening and complimenting government effort in development and to help the prisoners with skill to help themselves upon completion of their term in jail.
Speaking at the ceremony held in Banjul, Faye Suso, International Coordinator for JUICE said the project is meant to give a helping hand to the prison service, welding and Fabrication department to boost the skills of the prisoners.
Yankuba Saidy, Director of Administration of GPS expressed delights and lauded the importance of the donation which he said will compliment government’s effort in making prison a better place for the prisoners.
“We are really in need of skills training to rehabilitate the inmates”, he disclosed while he promised that the cash giving to them will be put into good use.
He expressed that earlier in 2019, the UK association donated series of items to the prison service which include mosquito nets, and Sewing Machines with it accessories.
In his comment, Modou Jarju, acting Director General of the Gambia Prison Service revealed that his office has signed a memorandum of understanding with the GIEPA an agency GPS recognises its support.
Madi Kambai Director of GIEPA said criminality is not a development trend, so in that “we are engaging inmates to tradable and transferable skills to better their life after custody.”
