Three Gambians have been detained for trying to smuggle illegal drugs into the state central prions, Mile 2, in Banjul.
The alleged drug smugglers are Modou Lamin Touray, 22-year-old resident of Latrikunda and Muhammed Jallow age 19 and resident of Serrekunda together with one female Oumie Camara, 20 years old and resident of Lamin they were apprehended when the prison officers on a routine search discovered some quantities of cannabis and clonazepam in three different bottles of body lotion creams.
The Drug Law Enforcement Officers said the suspects were on a visitation to the prisons to see inmate who are their relatives
“After conducting thorough search, the Prison officers discovered some quantities of suspected cannabis and sixteen (16) tablets of clonazepam. The three suspects were later handed over to the Anti-Drug officers for further investigation.
“We commend and celebrate the officers of the Gambia Prison Service for their vigilance, commitment and dedication to duty. The concealment methods, trafficking routes and means of conveyance of prohibited and a controlled drug is continually changing,” DLEAG said.
The agency said: “The saddest part of these illegal activity that occur at the mile 2 is having people in their early youthful age engaged in prohibited activities to the point of trying to smuggle illegal drugs in to the State Prison,” adding “the future of this country lies in the hands of the youth. As such, we must work together to ensure that they grow up to become responsible adults ready to take the baton to continue the race.”
The agency called on the parents and guardians to be vigilant and cautious of exposing teens to certain movies and series involving crimes and violence at early age.
“Some adults watch some movies with children who are below the recommended age and it exposes them to many vices that negatively affect upbringing, behavior and conduct of the child. With the advent of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) and emerging trends, the crusade becomes more complicated and complex,” it added.
