Reigning champions GPF start title defense with draw, Red Scorpions wins big

The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) Women’s League champions, The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has started their title defense with a draw against Berewuleng, while Red Scorpions thrashed Brikama United in the week-one fixtures of the GFF Women’s 1st Division League played over the weekend.

Four games were played in the 8-team GFF Women’s 1st Division League with all games played at the Live Your Dreams Football Academy field in Basori over the weekend.

There was only one win in the four encounters played during the opening of the league season with the rest of the three fixtures resulting in draws.

Reigning champions, The Gambia Police Force were forced to a 1-1 draw against Berewuleng in a game played at Basori on Friday.

Berewuleng first took the lead through Nyima Sanneh in the 27th minute, while GPF goal-poacher Catherine Jatta leveled the scores in the 37th for the female police side.

GPF who were crowned champions of the league last season was forced to share the spoils against Brikama-based team, Berewuleng in their first game of their title defense.

GPF occupy 5th position with 1 points leveled with Berewuleng, GAF, City Girls, Abuko United and Immigration respectively.

Elsewhere, Red Scorpions thrashed Brikama United 5-0 in a game played at the Live Your Dreams Football Academy field in Basori on Saturday.

Ola Buwaro opened the scoring for Red Scorpions in the 23rd minute. Fatou Fatty doubled her side’s lead in the 35th minute before going for the break.

Awa Tamba scored Red Scorpions third goal in the 57th minute of the second half. Brikama United scored an own-goal in the 67th minute before Awa Tamba completed her double in the 78th minute to wrap up the Red Scorpions scoring festival.

Jeshwang-based team, Red Scorpions, has yet again started the league brightly after recording a comfortable victory against the Sateba Girls.

This big win by Red Scorpions has signaled their readiness for high performance and challenge this season, while Brikama United will use the defeat to work on their weakness ahead of their subsequent games.

The win moved Red Scorpions to top of the standings with 3 points, while Brikama United occupied rock-bottom (8th) position with zero points after one game.

Abuko United were held to a goalless draw by Immigration in their opening game of the season played at the Live Your Dreams Football Academy field in Basori on Friday.

Abuko United who took 3rd position last season were forced to share the spoils by Immigration.

The Abuko-based team sit 6th position with 1 point, leveled with Immigration, GAF, Berewuleng, City Girls and GPF.

The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) were also forced to a 1-1 draw against City Girls in a game played at Basori on Saturday.

The Soldiers took the lead in the first half, while Mariama Dibba scored for City Girls in the 49th minute of the second half of the game.

GAF occupied 2nd position with 1 point, leveled with City Girls, Immigration, Berewuleng, Abuko United, Immigration and GPF.
