By Lamin Gibba

Gambian fans have reacted to the Scorpions exploits in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament following their victory over fellow West African side Guinea Conakry to progress to the quarterfinals of their first ever Afcon tournament.

The Gambia Scorpions side eliminated Guinea Conakry 1-0 in their round of 16 game played at the Stade de Baffousam on Monday.

Musa Barrow scored the Gambia’s only goal in the match in the 71st minute to help The Gambian team continue their unbeaten streak despite being debutant in the tournament.

The result has seen Gambians gone out in the streets jubilating what they term as history being made by the Scorpions team.

“I feel very much excited about the national team performance. They have proved the doubters and critics wrong after reaching this stage,” said Musa Joof, a Gambian fan during an interview with The Point Sports.

Hassum Camara, from Dippa Kunda, expressed delights to the Scorpions for reaching the last eight of the tournament despite being debutants.

“We have much to say about the Scorpions team because they have put smiles on the faces of every Gambian. We just want to pray for them (players) to go far because they are serving the nation.  May Allah reward them,” Camara stated.

Mariama Joof of Bakoteh expressed delight about the performance of the boys, noting that it is the first time that Gambia qualifies to the Africa Cup of Nations.

“It’s a plus for the Gambia. We are Scorpions and we are small but when we bite, you feel it. So we are praying for them to reach the finals,”Joof emphasized.

Omar Kebbeh from Abuko, said though the Gambia went to the tournament as minor but can beat any team.

“If the players put in the same performance they did in the past games, they will beat Cameroon in the quarterfinals,” he noted.

Meanwhile, the Scorpions will next play the host country Cameroon in the quarterfinal on Saturday 29 January 2022 at 4pm in Douala.
