Horticultural farmers at NEMA sponsored Garden in Nookunda have intensified in their efforts to sustain the skills and knowledge learned through Farmer Field School concept to realize their potential in organic farming and sharing of market information system.
The approached taken over the years has contributed to the attainment of food security and increased in nutritional uptake.
Speaking to The Voice, Modou Jadama Secretary to Farmer Field School thanks Department of Agriculture called on Ministry of Agriculture to strengthen farmers’ capacity to increase adoption of best agronomic practices to boost quality vegetables production.
According to him, since the establishment of the garden it has greatly enhanced, boost income and the committee has expanded 9 water taps at the garden.
He therefore launched an appeal to Ministry of Agriculture to support them with additional borehole to meet water requirement.
Fatou Jagne, President of North Bank Regional Marketing Federation, disclosed that the association has mobilize over D200,000 to buy vegetables from members across the region.
She noted that liquid fertilizer piloted at the garden through support from Global Climate Change Alliance GCCA + project enhances growth and development of plants. The scheme according to madam Jagne aimed at promoting youths’ participation in agriculture and creates employment opportunity by addressing irregular migration. The liquid fertiliser is piloted in 10 communities across the region and she noted that the program addressed pest infestation and growth of plants.
For his part, Kebba Manneh, water attendant at the garden thanked women vegetable growers for their active participation in production and stressed the need for additional borehole to meet the water needs and call for support in strengthen capacity development.
